OCDA invites you to attend the 15th annual PDI and Awards Ceremony, The Impact of Work in an Age of Uncertainty. This is the event of choice for regional career development professionals to enhance their skills, network with colleagues, recognize outstanding career development professionals, share best practices, and gain continuing education credits. At this year's PDI, Dr. David Blustein will preview his new book and research, The Impact of Work in an Age of Uncertainty, which reviews the psychological impact of work in the current era of massive disruptions in the workplace. The book is based on interviews with 61 people from across the U.S. It will include a review of the major themes from these interviews with a summary of implications for career counseling and public policy.

Session Descriptions:

Morning Session: Dr. Blustein will share some of the major themes of his new book, The Impact of Work in an Age of Uncertainty, and summarize some of the significant components of his interviews.  This session will be presentation based, and the content will be maximally useful for career practitioners and counselors in public and private sectors.

Afternoon Session: The afternoon will be used to provide application to some the theoretical content discussed in the morning session.  This session will include case studies, elements of role-playing with volunteers from the audience, and further applied exercises.

About Dr. David Blustein

While his research spans many areas—from poverty and oppression to culture and counseling—David Blustein’s study of the roles of work in psychological functioning has transformed counseling and vocational psychology. His expertise also includes unemployment, decent work, precarious work, relationships and work, the future of work, STEM career development for marginalized high school students, and other aspects of the radically changing world of labor.

Dr. Blustein earned his doctorate at Columbia University and received a master’s degree from Queens College and a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He has been awarded fellowships from the American Psychological Association and the American Educational Research Association. He has also received several other honors, including the John Holland Award for Outstanding Achievement in Personality and Career Research. The International Labor Organization recently invited him to join a network of experts examining the future of work.

Dr. Blustein has been with the Lynch School since 1999. He has authored over 100 scholarly articles, more than 20 book chapters, and two books. He is currently completing a book titled The Impact of Work in an Age of Uncertainty, to be published by Oxford University Press.
